The mineral Barite received its name after the Greek word barĂ½s (heavy); the spellings Barite, Baryth, Barite or Bariet, which are occasionally encountered in the retail trade as well as in the wholesale trade, are therefore not correct. Also the mining name "barite" points to the high density of 4.5 g/cm3.
