The platonic solids are very special geometric forms with a high symbolic value. They are the only uniform, three-dimensional solids that are constructed out of matching surfaces. Each platonic solid can be contained within a sphere and in turn hold a sphere itself.
They gained their deeper meaning in Platons (428 - 348 BC) philosophy of nature scripts by being linked to the elements and symbolising the harmonic order connecting everything. In his dialogue "Timaeus" Pluto writes about the formation of earth up to the creation of humans. There he explains that the entire world is created out of the four elements fire, air, water and earth.
These four elements are reflected in the four platonic solids tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron and Cube. The only solid not constructed out of triangles, the dodecahedron, symbolises the all-encompassing universe i.e. the inter-connecting part, the divine harmony. In their entirety the platonic solids are a symbolic image of creation and its principle.
