The polished scheelites are about 3.5cm tall and weigh about 60-70 grams.

A synonym is tungstone from the Swedish word tungsten (heavy stone, heavy stone); this refers to the exceptionally high density of the mineral of 6 g/m³. Other synonyms are, according to Wilhelm Scheele, the discoverer of the mineral: Scheel, Scheelerz, Scheelium and Scheelspat as well as wolframsaurer Kalk.
