To bring out the full grain of the petrified logs and branches, their cross-section is carefully polished by hand. As a charming contrast, the outside and back remains raw.

The most famous site for Petrified Wood in Madagascar is the region around Mahajanga. The Petrified Wood from there is mostly coniferous wood (Araucaria) from the Triassic period (between 200 and 250 million years old).
