In 1798 Abraham Gottlob Werner named the mineral with the name Coelestine, which is still valid today; decisive for the naming is the Latin word "coelestis" (sky-blue), because Coelestine is very often found in this color. In mineralogical works also the spelling Cölestin or Zölestin can be found, but in expert circles Coelestine has prevailed.
