The origin of the name "Eclipse" is unclear. However, it probably derives from the English term "eclipse", meaning darkening, and alludes to the contrast of black and yellow-orange colors of the mineral, reminiscent of a solar eclipse. Synonyms are Bumblebee or Bumbelbee Jasper/Jaspis, Bumblebee Jasper or Bumblebee Stone, Mustard Jasper or Mustard Jasper, mineralogically correct is the name Realgar-Calcite.
