Silicon (Si) is contained in many minerals, e.g. Rock Crystal SiO2. Pure silicon can be extracted from quartz sand or quartz gravel at temperatures around 2000° and then further processed. As a component of semiconductors, computer chips and solar cells, silicon is of great importance to industry.
